Why the capital of india shifted towards Delhi ?

Guys,

We all know that Delhi is the capital of India , also many of us are aware of that Calcutta (now Kolkata) was the capital of India during the British Raj, until December 1911.

Then what forced british to shift the capital to delhi will be explained in this segment.

First of all we have to understand that

Why did the British choose Calcutta as the 1st capital of India ?

The main reason to choose calcutta is that the city has the commercial, cultural, and educational centre of East India, also the port of calcutta which is India's oldest operating port from where british exports or trades .

- Calcutta possessed the largest & most vigorous group of European tradesmen among the port cities of the Indian Empire.

 - Because the British East India company had entered India through Bengal only.

- British fought, and ultimately won, was against of the bengal ruler of that time, Siraj-ud-daula.

- Britishers gave a crushing defeat to him in the battle of Plassey in 1757, after which the british rule started in India. So before they went on to conquer Delhi and the rest of India, they controlled bengal province and that's why Calcutta was their administrative capital before Delhi.

- At that time calcutta was on top priority city for britishers.

Why was India's capital shifted from Calcutta to Delhi ?

Delhi was officially announced as the capital of British Raj on December 12, 1911.

The capital was shifted from Calcutta as Delhi was the financial and political seat of many earlier empires and was located closer to the geographical center of India.

The rising nationalist movement in Calcutta was also responsible for the shift.

Also one of the main reason was that Calcutta was situated in the eastern coastal part of the country, while Delhi was located in the northern part,

So it makes it difficult and time consuming to reach other parts of India. Transport was not as fast as it is today.

The British government also believed that ruling India from Delhi was easier and more convenient than from calcutta.
